Innovation Above the Control Core—Continuity at the I/O Layer
ABB Automation Extended separates deterministic control from faster-moving digital services. For a compatible Satt installed base, CI865K01 illustrates how legacy I/O can remain connected while the AC 800M and System 800xA layers evolve.
A Practical Hardware Perspective on ABB’s New Automation Architecture
ABB’s Automation Extended strategy is changing the way process industries approach distributed control system modernization. Instead of forcing plants to replace a stable control platform before introducing artificial intelligence, advanced analytics or edge applications, ABB proposes a separation between the deterministic control environment and a more flexible digital environment.
Announced in February 2026, ABB Automation Extended is intended to bring AI, IoT, analytics and cloud-native services closer to established automation platforms, including System 800xA, Symphony Plus and Freelance. The approach addresses a persistent brownfield challenge: how can a plant add new digital capabilities without disturbing the control functions that already keep production running?
For facilities with an installed Satt I/O base, the ABB CI865K01 3BSE040795R1 provides a useful hardware example. The module does not perform AI processing or cloud analytics itself. Its importance lies elsewhere: it allows compatible legacy Satt I/O assets to communicate with an AC 800M controller, creating a practical bridge between retained field infrastructure and a newer control architecture.
Why Automation Extended Changes Brownfield DCS Planning
The migration decision becomes easier when teams separate two questions: what must remain stable today, and what can evolve on a faster digital lifecycle?
Protect deterministic operation
- Keep time-critical process execution inside the proven control environment.
- Allow analytics and digital services to evolve on a separate lifecycle.
- Avoid turning every data initiative into a plant-wide control replacement.
Business effectLower commissioning exposure
Preserve justified field investment
- Retain compatible Satt 19-inch or Series 200 I/O where engineering review supports it.
- Reduce rewiring, loop checks and the number of disturbed channels.
- Divide modernization into auditable phases instead of one high-risk cutover.

Satt I/O Network
BNC cabling, termination, node count and topology must be checked before a module is blamed for a fault.

AC 800M
The controller executes deterministic control logic. Processor choice must match system version and project load.

The control environment integrates controller data, operations, engineering and asset information.
AI & Analytics
OPC UA, edge analytics and cloud-native services belong to the wider digital architecture—not to CI865K01 itself.
Engineering boundary: CI865K01 preserves a communication path for compatible Satt I/O. It is not an AI processor, an OPC UA server or a newly announced Automation Extended module.
How CI865K01 Connects Satt I/O to the AC 800M Control Layer
A Dedicated Interface for Satt I/O Migration
CI865K01, ABB article number 3BSE040795R1, is an AC 800M communication interface kit. It consists of the CI865 module and TP865 baseplate and is designed to connect compatible Satt I/O installations to an AC 800M controller through the CEX Bus.
A typical architecture can be represented as follows:
Satt 19-inch Rack I/O or Series 200 I/O → Satt I/O Network → CI865K01 and TP865 → CEX Bus → AC 800M Controller → System 800xA Control Environment → Digital Applications and Analytics
The final digital layer may include OPC UA data exchange, edge analytics, condition-monitoring applications or AI-assisted operational tools. However, these capabilities belong to the wider system architecture. CI865K01 provides the communication path for the legacy I/O layer; it does not independently execute those digital services.

Engineering Data That Matters During System Design
According to ABB’s CI865 hardware information, the interface uses a BNC connection and supports hot swapping under approved operating conditions. A single CI865 can communicate with as many as 31 distributed I/O systems, while up to four CI865 units can be installed on the AC 800M CEX Bus, subject to the controller configuration and applicable system documentation.
The module has a typical 24 V current consumption of approximately 120 mA. Its specified operating-temperature range is 0 to +55°C, with a storage range of -40 to +70°C. The assembly measures approximately 59 × 185 × 127.5 mm and weighs about 700 g with its baseplate. It carries an IP20 enclosure rating and is intended for protected control-cabinet installation.
These figures help engineers check cabinet space, power allocation, environmental conditions and CEX Bus loading before ordering automation spare parts. They should still be verified against the project’s installed System 800xA release, AC 800M hardware configuration and current ABB documentation.

Audit the Installed BaseIdentify the real migration boundary
Record the Satt I/O family, network topology, node count, CEX Bus capacity, controller model and System 800xA version. Preserve application backups and I/O maps before hardware work begins.
Preserve Serviceable I/OLimit field disturbance during the cutover
Use CI865K01 only where the installed Satt architecture is compatible. Inspect BNC cabling and termination so network defects are not misdiagnosed as interface failures.
Modernize the Control LayerMove toward AC 800M and System 800xA
Validate processor capacity, firmware, software support and communication loading. A product such as PM861K01 is a system-context example, not an automatic companion for every project.

Evaluate OPC UA exchange, edge analytics, condition monitoring and AI-supported applications at the appropriate system layer, under the plant’s cybersecurity and change-control rules.
Important Functional Limitations
CI865 is a dedicated Satt I/O interface rather than a general-purpose ControlNet communication module. It should not be selected solely because another network uses physically similar connectors.
The interface does not provide line redundancy or module redundancy, and it cannot be used with a High Integrity controller. These limitations are important for safety-related systems and processes that require redundant communication paths.
CI865 must also not be confused with ABB interfaces used for other legacy platforms. An Advant Master S100 migration, for example, may involve CI855, CI856 or CI869 products, depending on the installed architecture. Identifying the original I/O family is therefore essential before recommending a replacement or migration component.

Conclusion: Modernization with Continuity Requires Precise Hardware Decisions
ABB Automation Extended presents a forward-looking route for introducing AI, analytics and open digital services without weakening the deterministic control environment. Its practical value will depend on how successfully each plant connects that architecture to its existing automation assets.
For facilities operating compatible Satt I/O, CI865K01 is a strong example of the hardware decisions behind progressive modernization. By connecting retained Satt I/O to AC 800M, it can help reduce unnecessary field disturbance and support a controlled, multi-stage migration toward System 800xA.
CI865K01 is discussed here as an installed-base modernization example. It should not be interpreted as a newly announced Automation Extended module or as proof of a specific ABB project configuration. MooreDCS is an independent industrial automation parts supplier, and the referenced products are presented as relevant ABB automation parts rather than components of an officially announced Automation Extended package.
