Q:We have a critical machine where the vibration probe was damaged. The part number on the old probe is 330101-00-75-20-02-CN. We have a spare probe in stock with the number 330101-00-07.5-20-02-00. The only differences are the case length code ('75' vs '07.5') and the '-CN' vs '-00'. Can we use the spare as a direct replacement without any recalibration or software changes?


A: For the case length, 75 is almost certainly intended to be 7.5 inches, which is what 07.5 explicitly means. Therefore, the physical dimensions of the probe body are identical. The -CN suffix typically relates to documentation and regional compliance, not physical or electrical specs. Therefore, yes, the spare (330101-00-07.5-20-02-00) should function as a direct electrical and mechanical replacement. The system should not require recalibration as both probes are 8mm, 2.0m long, and calibrated to AISI 4140 steel. However, always verify the gap setting after installation. Q:During a trip event, our monitoring system showed a sudden, sustained -22 Vdc from a 3300 XL vibration probe (gap should be ~ -9 Vdc). The machine is stopped. We checked the gap mechanically, and it's correct. What are the most likely causes, and how do we troubleshoot?


A: A sustained -22 Vdc indicates the probe is reading a target distance at the far negative end of its range (~90 mils) or is open-circuit. Likely causes and checks:
Probe Tip Damage: Inspect the PPS tip for physical damage, cracks, or wear. A damaged tip disrupts the eddy current field.
Broken Cable or Connector: Check for a severed cable or a loose/broken ClickLoc connector. The "click" feeling might be present even if the internal connection is faulty.
Failed Proximitor Sensor: Swap the suspect Proximitor with an adjacent channel's Proximitor (same model). If the fault follows the Proximitor, it has failed.
Shorted Cable: While less common, a short in the triaxial cable (center to shield) can cause abnormal output.
Target Surface Issue: Ensure the target area is clean, conductive, and has not been coated or corroded to a non-conductive state.
First Steps: Use the 3300 XL Test Plug (148722-01) on the Proximitor's test pins to see its raw output without field wiring. If the output is still wrong, the problem is the Proximitor or probe/cable. Visually inspect and then swap components systematically.
