Basic Information
Manufacturer: MTL Instruments (Eaton)
Product Family: MTL4000 Series
Function: 1-Channel Isolated Barrier & Repeater for 2/3-Wire Transmitters
Key Feature: HART® / Digital Communication Transparency (Bi-Directional)
Product Description
The MTL4041B provides a fully floating dc supply for energising a conventional 2- or 3-wire 4/20mA transmitter or a ‘smart’ transmitter located in a hazardous area, and repeats the current in another circuit to drive a safe-area load. For smart transmitters, the unit allows bi-directional transmission of digital communication signals superimposed on the 4/20mA signal so that the transmitter can be interrogated either from the operator station or by a hand-held communicator (HHC). The module can also be used with hazardousarea current sources and some vortex and turbine meters.

Application Fields
Smart Valve Positioner:Calibration Allows a technician to connect a HART® communicator at the field junction box (Terminals 3 & 4) without removing the 250Ω loop resistor or disconnecting the DCS signal.
Turbine Flow Meter Interfacing:Specifically noted as compatible with some vortex and turbine meters; the unit handles the higher excitation current demands often required by these devices.
Retrofit of Analog Loops to HART®:If upgrading an analog pressure transmitter to a smart transmitter, the MTL4041B ensures the existing 4/20mA loop wiring and IS barrier are compliant with digital FSK signals.
Frequently Asked Questions - MTL-4041B
Q: Why does the "Smart" application require a 250Ω load resistor?
A: HART® communication superimposes a Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) current signal (±0.5 mA) on the analog 4/20mA loop. The control system input must have a minimum 250 Ω impedance to convert this current ripple into a detectable voltage signal. The MTL4041B spec explicitly defines the load resistance to guarantee this impedance is present.
Q: Can I use Terminals 5 and 6 for HART® communication?
A: No. According to the safety description, Terminals 5 and 6 do not support HART® communications. You must use Terminals 3 and 4 for field-side HHC connection or pass the signal through the main output loop (9 & 11) for control-room based modems.
Q: What is the difference between connecting a 2-wire vs. 3-wire transmitter?
A:
2-Wire: Connect transmitter (+) to Terminal 2; Transmitter (-) to Terminal 5.
3-Wire: Connect transmitter (+) to Terminal 2; Transmitter (-) to Terminal 5; Connect the transmitter's third wire (usually shield or specific common) according to the transmitter manual—often to Terminal 6 or Earth.
Q: Is the LED just a power light?
A: Yes. The single green LED indicates that DC power (Vs) is present on Terminals 13 & 14. It does not indicate signal loop health or line fault detection.
