Why Power Modules Matter in a TMR Safety Architecture
When engineers discuss a Tricon safety system, most attention is usually directed toward the Main Processors and I/O modules.
In reality, none of those components can operate correctly without stable chassis power.
The TRICONEX Invensys 8312 Power Module is designed specifically for Tricon controllers used in Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). Installed directly within the Tricon chassis, the module converts incoming field power into regulated voltages required by processor modules, communication modules, and I/O cards.
In a refinery emergency shutdown system or gas compressor protection application, a failed power source can disable an entire safety rack. For this reason, power architecture is one of the first items reviewed during SIL verification and system availability calculations.
Unlike conventional PLC power supplies, the 8312 is engineered to support the fault-tolerant requirements of the Tricon Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) platform.

When specifying a power module for a Tricon rack, engineers typically begin with power loading calculations.
The total current consumption of processor modules, communication cards, and I/O assemblies determines the required chassis power capacity.
The 8312 is designed to support these continuous operating loads while maintaining voltage stability across the backplane.
Key considerations during installation include:
Incoming supply voltage compatibility
Chassis power budget
Ambient cabinet temperature
Redundant power configuration
Heat dissipation within the enclosure
Long-term capacitor aging
One issue often overlooked during panel design is airflow.
I have seen Tricon cabinets installed with less than 25 mm of clearance above the power modules. The system initially operates normally, but elevated internal temperatures accelerate capacitor aging and reduce service life.
For high-density safety panels, adequate ventilation around power modules should always be included in thermal calculations.

Supporting Redundant Power Architectures for Higher Availability
A major advantage of the Tricon platform is its ability to support redundant hardware architectures.
In many refinery and offshore projects, two power modules are installed within the same chassis. Under normal conditions both units remain available to support system operation.
If one power module is removed or experiences a fault condition, the remaining unit continues supplying the rack without interrupting controller operation.
For maintenance teams, this means replacement activities can often be performed without shutting down the entire safety system.
This capability is particularly valuable during planned turnarounds where maintaining SIS availability remains a requirement while individual hardware components are inspected or replaced.
Combined with the TMR processor architecture, redundant power modules contribute directly to overall system availability calculations.
